Obituary of James Rudolph Hanson

James "Jim" Rudolph Hanson James R. Hanson, 74, passed away peacefully at home, with his daughters by his side on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. He was born September 1, 1945 in Ashtabula, the son of the late Harold and Helen (Hassett) Hanson. Jim graduated from Harbor High School Class of 1963. After high school, Jim served in the US Army for a short time before receiving a medical discharge. He married the love of his life, Patricia Dunick on December 11, 1970; this December would have been their 50th Anniversary. He was also a former member of the Ashtabula Elks Lodge. Jim worked as a production manager at the Ashtabula Star Beacon. He wore many hats during his 50 years working there. From setting type to going to computer school in Boston. He was also in charge of the mail room and press room. He retired in 2016 not by choice but out of changing times in the newspaper business. It was time. He also worked 10 years full time/part time at Carlisle's in security. In his earlier years, he enjoyed being a disc jockey at Lakeshore Park, loved baseball, comic books, and riding his motorcycle. Jim loved music and was a collector of everything; vintage baseball cards, coins, antique toys, cap guns, comic books and much more. He was a member of the Star Beacon Golf League, and also enjoyed golfing with his son Mike. During retirement Jim enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking them on trips, to local festivals, yard sales, flea markets, and fishing. Jim was an avid poker player. He always hosted games at home with co-workers from the Star Beacon; he greatly enjoyed his weekly poker games with his best friend, Denny. Jim loved having and going to yard sales, he attended countless flea markets and auctions. One of his favorites was the 127 yard sale that goes through six states and runs 690 miles long, "The world's longest yard sale." He was a wonderful and deeply generous husband and father, always there for his family with unconditional love, always willing to sacrifice to provide anything for them. He meant the world to his family and will greatly be missed by all who knew him. Especially his two dogs, Peppe and Ollie Hanson. Mr. Hanson is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Patricia; sister, Deborah Kivela; daughters, Beverly Kehres and Michelle (Greg) Mitcham; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Katie) Baker, Jennifer Baker, Morgan, Samantha, and Aiden Mitcham; and great-grandchildren, Maylea, JJ, Jaycuan, Daijah, Lavaisha, Mercedes, Emileigha, Lincoln, Leontae, Garrett, and Keeley.
